Fit for 90? The battle over Europe’s next climate and energy targets
Watch the webinar recording.
This webinar is an opportunity to catch up with the debate about EU climate and energy policy targets. After the European Commission launched its overdue proposal for a 2040 emission reduction objective, and before the COP30 climate summit in Brazil, Member States and the European Parliament now struggle with the pathway to climate neutrality. Under which conditions could they agree on a 90% reduction target? The option to include emission reductions from projects outside of the EU is also highly controversial. The technology neutrality principle and the desire to remove administrative burden might end the dedicated targets for renewables and energy efficiency that underpinned the 2030 target of cutting greenhouse gases by 55% (‘Fit for 55 package’).
- Will the EU come to the next climate summit in Brazil as a leader?
- Is the option to allow offsetting emissions outside of the EU the necessary hand that reaches out to the more hesitant Member States to get them on board – or is it an open door for undermining climate ambition?
- What will be the impact of offsetting and other ‘flexibilities’ on the EU Emissions Trading System?
- Should the EU continue with setting dedicated targets for the growth of renewables and for energy efficiency?
