Why Food Justice Now?

How can the South African G20 presidency push for transformative, people-centred solutions fo Food Justice?

From December 2024 to November 2025, South Africa holds the G20 Presidency, a rare opportunity to put transformative, people-centred solutions on the global agenda. With food security elevated as a headline priority, the government has committed to tackling the root causes of hunger and food price volatility through measures such as diversified supply chains, buffer stocks, support for local and subsistence farming, and reducing food waste. This dialogue, Why Food Justice Now?, will examine how these commitments can be shaped into just, inclusive, and community-driven outcomes in the G20 resolutions.

This inaugural session will explore:

  • The urgency of foregrounding food justice within South Africa's G20 agenda;
  • The structural causes of hunger and poverty in South Africa; and
  • Concrete policy pathways, both nationally and internationally, that can strengthen food sovereignty, advance economic justice, and build climate resilience

Keynote Speakers

  • Olivier de Schutter, Co-chair, IPES-Food; UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights
  • Nangamso Ka NomaHlubi Koza, Development strategist
  • Raj Patel, Writer, activist, academic, film maker and member of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems
  • Caroline Peters, Executive Director, Callas Foundation
