Böll.Global | COP30 Climate Conference Without the US - What Can We Expect?

COP30 in Belém, Brazil, marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement. A realistic assessment must conclude that the global response to the climate crisis is not in a good state. Multilateralism and international law are under significant pressure; the USA has once again withdrawn from the climate agreement and has cut its financial contributions to many UN institutions.

The Global South is being largely left to face the challenges of the climate crisis alone. The outcomes of COP29 in Azerbaijan have shown that industrialized nations are not fulfilling their historical responsibility to support the Global South with comprehensive climate finance. Instead, the focus is shifting towards dangerous distractions like carbon offsets - both internationally and within the EU.

Furthermore, all governments are required to submit their new climate action plans, the so-called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), for 2035 before COP30. To date, the collective efforts to end fossil fuel emissions and effectively curb the climate crisis are far from sufficient.

We will discuss with experts what can still be expected from COP30 in Brazil. What role will the host country, Brazil, play, and what are its goals and priorities? What is the status of climate finance? What about the collective efforts to limit the climate crisis to 1.5°C? What demands are young people making on the international community? How is the shifting geopolitical landscape impacting climate negotiations?
